Leading trainer Tony Gollan’s prediction with Amexed proved spot when the five-year-old gave him his first Caloundra Cup at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

Amexed caused a major upset in the 2400-metre Listed feature with a 1-1/4 length win over Jumbo Prince.

All Clear finished third, a further three-quarters of a length away.

Ipswich Cup winner Maurus proved the major disappointment finishing fifth after starting a $1.50 favourite.

Gollan, who is holidaying in Bali, predicted Amexed was set for a big staying future after winning the Winter Provincial Stayers Series Final (2150m) at Ipswich two weeks ago.

He gave Amexed a big chance of toppling Maurus after he ran a faster time in the Provincial Stakes.

Amexed looked like making a top stayer as a three-year-old but had been in a form slump since his previous win in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate at Doomben as a three-year-old in 2014.

He subsequently went on to finish fourth in the Group 3 Grand Prix before a close fifth in the Group 1 Queensland Derby won by Sonntag.

Gollan rates Amexed as the best stayer he’s trained and will target the Grafton Cup on July 24 with the five-year-old.
